A little planning makes shifting a 2 BHK much less stressful. Use this checklist from two weeks before the move to the day you settle in.
Two weeks before
- Get written quotes and book your mover.
- Ask your society office about moving hours, lift booking and NOC.
- Start clearing out things you do not need.
One week before
- Update your address for bank, gas and deliveries.
- Use up frozen food and stock from the kitchen.
- Pack books and things you rarely use.
The day before
- Empty and defrost the fridge.
- Keep jewellery, cash and documents in a separate bag that travels with you.
- Pack an essentials bag: clothes, chargers, medicines and basic kitchen items.
Moving day
- Be present while the team packs and labels boxes.
- Check every room, cupboard and balcony before the truck leaves.
- Note the number of boxes.
At the new home
- Count the boxes as they come in.
- Unpack the kitchen and bedroom first.
- Ask the team to refit beds and wardrobes before they leave.
Room-by-room packing tips
- Kitchen: wrap each glass and plate separately and pack plates standing on their edge.
- Bedroom: keep clothes on hangers in a wardrobe carton, and put mattresses in covers.
- Living room: keep the TV box if you have it, and take photos of how cables are connected.
- Bathroom: seal bottles with tape and pack them upright in a plastic bag.
- Balcony: empty and dry plant pots, and pack tools in a separate box.
Things people often forget
- Cancelling or moving the newspaper, milk and maid services.
- Collecting the security deposit and handing over keys to the owner.
- Taking meter readings for electricity and gas at both homes.
- Checking the loft, the space above wardrobes and the society store room.
Moving to another city with a 2 BHK
If your 2 BHK is moving out of Pune, add a few days to the plan. Goods for nearby cities usually reach in a day or two, while far cities take longer. Plan your own travel so that you reach before the truck, and keep enough clothes and essentials for the first few days.
